Final for Graphic Design

What did you do this semester?

What were the projects?
The projects were

  • Typography
  • Infographic
  • Vectoring faces
  • Learning about format with the raccoon.

Face vector

The goal of this project was to use organic shapes to make a vectored portrait of ourselves. It did not take me very long since I did not go extremely detailed since I like the minimalism look. I still went as detailed as I could. My biggest challenge was getting the shapes correct and the face. In the original picture of me, my glasses warp part of my face so instead of having a circle for a head I had to use a unique shape and it made it difficult to add the shading correctly. I learned how to use the pen tool which would come in handy in a project I did in my own time. My overall opinion on this project is I like it. It would have been better if I could find out how to make a paint splatter and make it look like a graffiti minimalist portrait. I used my time in class a little too well in this project. I got done around 3 days ahead but it gave me time to work on some personal projects. I would come back to it once in a while and fix the nose and whatnot.

Infographic

This was one of my favorite assignments I loved being able to pick a topic I was interested in Informing people on. The project's goal was to take a topic we liked and inform people about it. Some challenges I faced was to just overall make it look good. My favorite panel is the title panel and I wish I gave my other panels a cool background like on that one. Along the way I learned a tool that I do not know the name of but is selected with shift-M. Some feedback I was given was that It was too wordy and a section I had was all words so I changed the section to decrease the overall wordiness

Raccoon/typography project

The project was to create a raccoon in illustrator and then use typography to make a postcard with the raccoon on it. I love typography but I have terrible handwriting. This project took me the longest and I became a little behind. Some challenges I faced was creating the graphics. I was not accustomed to illustrator at this point and following the written directions was a little confusing since I did not know where anything was. In my opinion this is one of those projects that you think you did bad on but you learned a lot from it.

How did you use your time in class?

I used my time wisely some of the time. Sitting in silence working on the same thing for an hour is a little boring but it was fixed when I decided to listen to a podcast while I worked. I stayed productive in my times of being done, I have 3 side projects that I worked on when I was completed. Outside of class I like to look at fonts and practice typography and even sketch out future projects I'd like to work on like making stickers using adobe illustrator.

Areas of graphic design

My biggest area of strength is my passion. I love to draw digitally and although it's not with an expensive art tablet I still enjoy it. I also want to go into advertising and graphic design as I get older and possibly use these skills to open my own bakery.
Some areas I need improvement on are staying focused for long periods of time. My podcast has helped with that but the podcast won't always be there for me.

Summary

overall I'm 100% certain that I want to choose this class to have for the rest of the year. I loved learning skills and finding my passions in this class. The only thing I would do differently is to redo my raccoon project since it looks very bad. My take away is that I love graphic design and would like to pursue it as a career. Next semester I would like to add personal touches to my in class projects and do some more out of class projects to test my skills.

Final

In this project I actually got to animate the panorama and I learned how to place things so they can be used as a panorama. I picked this project because it was easy yet challenging. I had to do something easier so I could manage my time but I had a lot of issues with it. Iv'e improved with my use of the pin puppet tool and panoramas.

I was given this Ball project after being gone for a while so it's very amateur. I learned how to use after effects with this and it was a real learning experience. Looking back I can see tons and tons of flaws, the whole thing is a bad flaw

I like my worm animation, I think it's funny and the worm is based on Griffin McElroy, a funny cool radical dude. The griffin's goofers is a reference to something he did in one of his videos

Panoramic animation

In this project we created a Scene and animated it as if it was in a 3d space.
I made a lot of mistakes with this project including but not limiting to:
Drawing it wrong
Spending too long on drawing it and having no time to animate
messing up the format

Some things I think I did well with were the overall aesthetic of the plain drawings. My cloudy rock field had a lot of detail not present in the final animation. I learned to not get over-ambitious with these projects or I won't have enough time to finish them. I had a lot of fun designing the clouds and coming up with a theme/ design for this project.

Worm Animation

This was probably my most favorite animation I've done with the introduction of the mesh tool. I decided to make my worm look like Griffin McElroy because why not. The "Griffin's Goobers" is an image made by Griffin making fun of those things. Making my animation was really fun, it allowed me to connect more with my friends who gave me ideas for this outstanding animation
I am very glad I learned to use the mesh tool, it's my most favorite tool ive learned. I will be using the mesh tool in the future hopefully!

Ball Animation

This is my ball bounce animation. I got it done really quickly since I was gone during the making of this animation and I didn't want it to get behind. During this simple animation I learned a lot. It dosent matter how it looks, what matters is what learned from this project. I choose a yellow ball since it would stand out against the sky and grass easily. I gave my grass a nice Birch-Tree color scheme because I thought it looked nice.
what I would do differently is clean up my squash and stretch, add more clouds, and fix some of the grass.

overall I learned a lot with this project and hope to continue

Photoshop reflection

What I learned

I learned a lot with the photoshop tutorials. Here are a few examples of what I have learned. I learned that the lasso tool can be very helpful to select areas to get a bigger or smaller radius. I learned how to add noise to an image for texture and how to remove dirt/blemishes/T-shirt logos. I also learned how to align a series of pictures for a more interesting composition.

Key tools

Some key tools you will use in photoshop are the Lasso tool, the spot healing brush, and the Clone stamp tool. These are just a few of the important tools in photoshop. The Lasso tool is important because it allows you to get a more exact selection of what you're looking for. The spot healing brush allows things like dirt and blemishes to be covered up. The clone stamp tool allows you to take different parts of the picture and implement it into different areas. It's very important when you need to get rid of a tree in the way or other objects.

My favorite skills

One of my most favorite skills I learned was just learning the ins and outs of photoshop in general. This skill can help me as I progress with my graphic design career. Another skill I learned was covering up graphics on Tee shirts which would be helpful in pictures to post online if the shirt's graphic is not ideal.

Strengths and Weaknesses

My biggest strength is that I've worked with photo manipulation before. I've used the clone stamp tool and some others as well. I did these things with an app on my phone but doing it with an actual program is a lot better. My biggest weakness would probably be layers. I always mess up with adding or merging layers because I always think "Yeah I'm done with that layer."

What would you do different?

I would probably took more time to make my edits look a lot nicer and cleaner. On some of them, it's way too obvious that I've edited it. I would also next time not take a week long vacation so I'm not so behind that I no longer have a chance to catch up.

What would you do the same?

I'd continue to add my knowledge of photo manipulation as I'm working that way I can apply the skills I already have.

Conclusions

I had a lot of fun learning more about layouts and photo tricks and editing. I hope I can apply my knowledge to more projects in the future.

The Thief And The Cobbler

The Thief And The Cobbler was a movie that was in production for over three decades, it began in London in the late 1960s.. This film was claimed to supposedly be "the best animated movie of all time." In 2012 a documentary about the movie's process was made by the name of Persistence Of Vision.

Clips of the lost movie are hoarded by collectors who actively try to recreate the vision. Due to it's complicated past and such long delays, The Thief And The Cobbler has gained a cult following. Many problems arose in the process of making the movie, like the fact that the film's protagonist looked like Jafar from Aladdin. Warner Brothers Studio ended up pulling the movie from their control. The movie went over budgetsand switched from company to company having shots be remade over and over.

To this day, loyal fans are trying to restore this piece of perfectionist art.

Final group project post

Our product is "The food Printer" and it's basically a 3D printer that takes food instead of plastic. Our company name is "Food Tech" and our slogan is a play on "I can't believe it's not butter!" Our process   was coming up with a product/company, making a video for it, making graphics, making an animation, and making the website. I created the food printer logo, the animated logo, the banner, and I edited the video. I think I learned that if someone doesn't do their job in a group, to let them slug behind then give them an important job to do so they are equal to everyone else's work. What I would have done differently is possibly choose a different product since ours was apparently too hard to understand and was "impossible" even though two other people's projects were magically refilling cups. I'm most proud of my animation, as I really like the transitions.

our group presentation was difficult, as we had half a website, haven't rehearsed, and my amazing animation wasn't present. If I were to redo the presentation, you can bet your butt that my animation would be on there and my picture would still not be there.

overall I really liked this project.

Tree Graphic Design

We were told to sketch 20 different ways to draw a tree, a bird, or a house. I choose to draw 20 types of trees. I drew The Great Deku Tree, Dr.Suess trees, Animal Crossing trees, braided trees, a tree stump, a dead tree, a willow tree, a child's drawing tree, a pine tree ect. I had to choose one of these trees to recreate in Adobe Illustrator. The tree I choose was the Animal Crossing tree. I choose this tree because it would be easy to make but still bring on a challenge.

I think the tree cam out very nice looking. The leaves kind of look like sharp needles, if i could go back I would probably fix that. Making the tree roots and tuffs of the tree was a very difficult process. I had to take a darker color copy of the part and layer it behind it. The problem was that my layers were all messed up, which made it difficult to do anything before i fixed it.

What Animal are you test

For "what animal am I" test I got an Otter. Being am Otter means I am a social person, I'm very open and positive, but i'm notorious for messy rooms and goofing off.  I think this is slightly inaccurate as  I am not a very social person. I'm not very talkative either. The rest of the Otter I can relate to. I do love influencing and motivating others with my art and I can be spontaneous at times.

Myer's Briggs personality test

My Myers-Briggs personality is ISFP. I am 47% Introvert. 25% Sensing,  41% Feeling, and 25% Perciving. I am very Introverted, and have a hard time talking to people at times. I make decisions based on how i'm feeling. If I have an important decision to make I have to take a minute to become calm. Sometimes I use this to my advantage to get away with procrastinating.

I think people can tell by how I act that i'm an introvert. I spend my time on my phone in the mornings, not really talking to anyone. Some people however, think I'm the very outgoing type, which I'm not. I think my personality test is spot on and 100% accurate.

I'm definantly a more creative type and can offer my skills in jobs and projects.

I share my personality with David Bowie, Lady Gaga,  Brad Pitt and more.

Colors

My favorite color is White. I like the color white because of it's calm and gracefulness. White is the color of majestic animals such as Swans and Polar Bears. The color is like an empty canvas standing on an art board, dripping with possibility and endless creative ideas. By adding white to any color, you can make a lighter color thats easier on the eyes, or a new color altogether.

My least favorite color is red. I dislike Red because it's such a negative color. It's the color of anger, bloodshed, energy, and harm. Red is such a bright color and so energetic its hard to not see it. It represents power and threats. Of course red can mean calmer things but the only thing that stands out for me is the negative affects.

My Favorite and my least favorite color both make a good color scheme however. Think of it as a graceful swan with rad red markings. A very bold red and a calming white can mix and turn into a loving pink. The two colors aren't perfect but they are together. Pink is used all the time in Valentine's day and girl's clothes.

What is Graphic Design???

My artistic view of this piece was showing what social medias I use and how it affects society. Instead of logos I choose apps (excluding the apple logo) and a mural-like creature to show how we are so dependent on these apps and logos and how graphic design is such a large part of our lives.

I choose to keep my drawing simple, keeping in mind the meaning of the colors in the creature; Dark purples, greens, and blacks and whites. The darks represent the bad parts of these apps while the lights represent how important they are to Graphic artists.

The apps I used was Youtube (video sharing), Skype (messaging and calling people), Instagram (Photo sharing), Apple (product company), and Amino (sharing art and ideas on topics). These apps are ones i use everyday that allow me to connect outside of my state.
